Gratitud

El jueves se celebró en Estados Unidos y Canadá el día de Acción de Gracias, una fecha en que las familias se reúnen para agradecer por las bendiciones recibidas. Es importante recordar el verdadero sentido de esta fiesta, la expresión de gratitud, antes que pensar en comida, partidos de fútbol o compras.

Gratitude

This past Thursday was the Thanksgiving celebration in the United States and Canada, a date where families get together to thank for the blessings received. It is important to remember the real meaning of this holiday, which is being grateful, before thinking about food, football games or shopping.

Liberados

Algunos de los activistas de Greenpeace que habían sido detenidos por el gobierno ruso por protestar contra la perforación petrolífera en el Ártico, fueron liberados esta semana. De acuerdo a Greenpeace, el rompehielos Arctic Sunrise donde se encontraban los activistas estaba en aguas internacionales y realizaba una protesta pacífica.

Released

Some of the activists from Greenpeace who were detained by the Russian government for protesting against oil drilling in the Artic, were released this week. According to Greenpeace, the icebreaker Artic Sunrise, where the activists were, was in international waters and they were part of a peaceful protest.

Uno de los animales más raros del mundo, el saola, conocido también como el "unicornio asiático" por lo raro que es encontrarlo, ha sido visto por primera vez en más de diez años. Esto trae una esperanza a los esfuerzos por recuperar esta especie en peligro de extinción.

Unexpected sighting

One of the most rare animals in the world, the saola, known as well as the "Asian unicorn"  because of its rarity, has been seen for the first time in more than a decade. This brings a hope to the efforts of recovering this species in danger of extinction.

Una tortilla que unió a dos genios

Aquella noche de 1848 el joven Jules llevaba puesto su único traje, aquel que se turnaba con un amigo para frecuentar alguna que otra tertulia de ambiente literario e intelectual de Parí­s.
Muchas veces solo se alimentaba de pan y leche ya que sólo le alcanzaba para pagar el alquiler de una modesta habitación en el barrio latino y, sobre todo, para comprar libros.
Se hací­a tarde, y mientras bajaba las escaleras de la casa de un conocido y bohemio salón de tertulias,  Jules tropieza con un caballero que subí­a apresuradamente y resoplando por las escaleras.
Jules lo mira altaneramente y dice:
-“Seguro que usted ha cenado muy bien esta noche”
-“Perfectamente joven, nada menos que una tortilla de tocino a la nantesina”- responde el desconocido
-“Las tortillas a la nantesina de Parí­s no valen nada. Hay que echarles azafrán, ¿entiende?”  interrumpe Jules.
-“¿Así­ que sabe usted hacer tortillas, joven?” pregunta el caballero.
-“¿Que si sé hacer tortillas, señor?, sobre todo me las sé comer” – contesta nuestro amigo.
-“¡Es usted un insolente! Y le exijo una satisfacción. Aquí­ tiene mi tarjeta… Vendrá el viernes a mi casa… a cocinar usted mismo una tortilla”
Al dí­a siguiente Jules cuenta el curioso incidente a su amigo, saca la tarjeta, la lee y grita estupefacto: “¡Alejandro Dumas!”
Sí­, aquel voluminoso caballero de las escaleras era nada más y nada menos que Alejandro Dumas, el gran escritor y autor de novelas de gran éxito como “Los tres Mosqueteros” y “El Conde de Montecristo”
Desde aquel momento ambos mantuvieron una gran amistad y Dumas se convirtió, hasta su muerte en 1870, en consejero literario y protector de Verne.

How an omelette joined two geniuses 

That night in 1848 the young Jules was wearing his only suit. He carefully took turns with his friend to wear it to frequent occasional gatherings of the literary and intellectual atmosphere in Paris.
Many days he only fed on bread and milk, as he just managed to pay rent for a modest room in the Latin Quarter and, especially, to buy books.
It was getting late, and as he descended the stairs of a known and bohemian salon for gatherings, Jules encounters a gentleman climbing the stairs hastily and puffing.
Jules looks at him haughtily and said:
- "Surely you've eaten very well tonight"
- "Perfectly young man, nothing less than a bacon Nantesian omelette"- replied the unknown man.
- "The Nantesian omelets are worthless in Paris. Saffron should be added, you know?" interrupted Jules.
- "So you know how to make omelets, young man?"  asks the gentleman.
- "Do I make omelets, sir? I especially know how to eat them" - blurts our friend.
- "You insolent!  I demand satisfaction. Here's my card ... come on Friday to my house ... to cook an omelette by yourself."
The next day Jules was telling his friend about the incident. He takes out the card, he reads it and screams shocked: "Alexandre Dumas!"
Yes, that plump and bulky gentleman from the stairs was none other than Alexandre Dumas , the great writer and author of highly successful novels as "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo".
Since that time they maintained a great friendship and Dumas became, until his death in 1870, a literary adviser and protector of Verne.

Energía solar

Hace algunos meses hablamos del Impulso Solar, el primer avión solar y su vuelo cruzando los Estados Unidos, incluyendo paradas en Phoenix, Dallas, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Washington, D.C antes de arribar a la ciudad de Nueva York. Ahora, su nueva meta será circunnavegar el globo en el 2015 usando sólo energía solar. La compañía de Solar Impulse trabajara en conjunto con una de las más grandes compañías de internet para promover este vuelo. Promover y desarrollar tecnologías para usar mejor la energía solar es una buena noticia y hace pensar en un futuro brillante para el uso de la energía renovable.

Solar energy

Some months ago we talked about the Solar Impulse, the first solar plane and its flight across the United States, including stops in  Phoenix, Dallas, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Washington, D.C before arriving New York City. Now, its next goal will be to circumnavigate the globe in 2015 using just solar energy. Solar Impulse will work in partnership with one of the biggest internet companies to promote this flight. Promoting and developing technology to better use solar energy will allow a bright future for renewable energy utilization.

Puestas de sol para meditar…
No importa la lentitud con la que vayas, siempre y cuando no te detengas.

Sunsets to meditate…

It doesn't matter if you go slow, as long as you don't  stop.

Con la ayuda de la fundación de un conocido multimillonario, Brasil producirá vacunas contra la rubéola y el sarampión que tendrán bajo costo para ser exportadas a países en desarrollo. La fundación proveerá $1.1 millones para hacer esto posible, siguiendo su meta de hacer que las vacunas vitales estén disponibles para todos los niños en el mundo.

Well spent

With the help of a well known multimillionaire's foundation, Brazil will produce low cost vaccines against measles and rubella to be exported to developing countries.  The foundation will provide $1.1 million to make this possible, following its goal of making vital vaccines available to all the children in the world.

• Cásate con la persona correcta. De ésta decisión dependerá el 90% de tu felicidad o tu miseria.
• Observa el amanecer por lo menos una vez al año.
• Estrecha la mano con firmeza, y mira a la gente de frente a los ojos.
• Ten un buen equipo de música, aprende a tocar un instrumento, baila lento, canta en la ducha.
• Sonríe bastante. No cuesta nada y va más allá que todo precio.
• Elige a un socio de la misma manera que elegirías a un compañero de tenis: busca que sea fuerte donde tú eres débil y viceversa.
• Recuerda los nombres de las personas, recuerda los cumpleaños de las personas.

• Marry the right person. This one decision will determine 90% of your happiness or misery.
• Watch a sunrise at least once a year.
• Have a firm handshake and look people in the eye.
• Have a great stereo system, learn to play a musical instrument, whistle, slow dance, sing in the shower.
• Smile a lot. It costs nothing and is beyond price
• Choose a business partner the way you choose a tennis partner. Select someone who's strong at where you are weak
• Remember people's names, remember people's birthdays.
• Treat everyone you meet like you would like to be treated.
• Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.
• Avoid negative people, they find a problem for every solution.
• Put money to use helping others while you are living. That is wealth's greatest satisfaction.
• Never confuse wealth with success.
• Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, power or prestige, but on relationships with people you love and respect.
