Sede contra el calentamiento global

La ONU designó a Corea del Sur como la sede de la oficina del Fondo de Naciones Unidas contra el calentamiento global. Este fondo se creó el año pasado durante la conferencia del clima en Durban, Sudáfrica y servirá para canalizar proyectos a los países más vulnerables a enfrentar las consecuencias del cambio climático.

Curiosity empezó su labor

El  explorador Curiosity empezó a tomar las primeras muestras del suelo de Marte. Habiendo aterrizado en agosto del 2012, como parte de la misión de la NASA Mars Science Laboratory, este vehículo explorador evaluará si Marte fue o es aun un ambiente capaz de alojar vida.

Sonidos humanos

Investigadores en Estados Unidos publicaron estudios sobre una ballena beluga  llamada NOC que emitía sonidos muy cercanos a los sonidos humanos. NOC intentaba imitar los sonidos humanos espontáneamente, sin entrenamiento. Como si hubiera querido comunicarse con los seres humanos.

Host against global warming

The UN designated South Korea as host for the office of the UN Fund against global warming. This fund was created last year during the Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa and will support projects to the most vulnerable countries to counter effects of climate change.

Curiosity started its work

The explorer Curiosity started to take its first samples of Mars soil. Landing in August 1012, as part of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory mission, this rover will assess whether Mars ever was, or is still, an environment able to support life.

Human sounds

Researchers in the US published studies about a beluga whale named NOC that used to make sounds very close to human speech. NOC seemed to try to imitate human sounds spontaneously, without training.  As if it wanted to communicate with human beings.

INSPIRING MUSIC

"Déjame que te cuente…" sobre una mujer que le cantó con amor a su país, a su gente y a sus tradiciones. Maria Isabel Granda, conocida como Chabuca Granda (1920-1983), una de las más grandes representantes de la música peruana, con poética composición empieza de esa manera su canción “La Flor de la Canela”, conocida a nivel mundial.

Esta es la canción que nos inspira esta semana, interpretada por el talentoso tenor peruano Juan Diego Flórez.

"Let me tell you…" about a woman who sang with love to her country, to her people and their traditions. Maria Isabel Granda, known as Chabuca Granda (1920-1983) one of the greatest representatives of  Peruvian music. With poetic composition, she begins in this way her song “La Flor de la Canela” (The Cinnamon Flower), known worldwide.

This is the song that inspires us this week, interpreted by talented Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez.

A pesar de tener el mismo nombre que el puente de Venecia, el nombre del puente de Barranco tiene un significado diferente. El puente de Venecia fue llamado así por los suspiros de los prisioneros que eran llevados por allí al calabozo. El Puente de los Suspiros de Barranco en cambio se refiere a los suspiros de los enamorados, quienes en este bello puente de madera construido en 1876, encuentran lugar para el romance.

Despite having the same name as the bridge in Venice, the name of the bridge in Barranco has a different meaning. The bridge in Venice was named because of the sighs of the prisoners that were taken through the bridge to prison. The Bridge of Sighs in Barranco refers instead to the sighs of people in love, who, in this beautiful wooden bridge built in 1876, find the perfect place for romance.

Esta vez tenemos más de una buena noticia, lo cual es una buena noticia. Aquí van.

Salto al vacío

Desde un globo que lo llevó a la estratósfera, el domingo pasado el austriaco Felix Baumgartner realizó un salto desde una altura de 39 kilómetros, alcanzando la velocidad máxima de 1.342 kilómetros por hora y rompiendo la barrera del sonido, para luego terminar su descenso en paracaídas. Aunque parecía una idea descabellada, poco práctica y muy peligrosa, lo destacable es que para él era importante realizar este salto y no paró hasta lograr su cometido, luego de una preparación de cinco años. Es el primer ser humano en romper la velocidad del sonido en caída libre y desde esa altura.

Un paso para Cuba

Por primera vez después de medio siglo, el gobierno cubano anunció que a partir de mediados de enero eliminará la necesidad de obtener un permiso de salida para viajar. Bastará con tener un pasaporte y, si fuera el caso, la visa del país donde se va a viajar. Este es un obstáculo menos para que los cubanos puedan viajar, siendo que obtener el permiso era muy difícil y muy costoso. Aunque aún falta mucho, ya que tendrán que tramitar pasaporte y visa, podría ser un buen primer paso.
Día de la Niña

El 11 de octubre se celebró el primer Día Internacional de la Niña, designado por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas. Se invitó a los Estados Miembros, las organizaciones internacionales y la sociedad civil en general a crear conciencia sobre la situación de vulnerabilidad que enfrentan las niñas en el mundo. El propósito es promover sus derechos en educación, salud sexual y reproductiva, integridad e igualdad. Esta celebración destaca el empoderamiento de las niñas y la protección de sus derechos humanos.

Leap into the void

From a balloon that took him to the stratosphere, last Sunday Austrian Felix Baumgartner jumped from a height of 39 kilometers, reaching the maximum speed of 1.342 kilometers per hour and breaking the sound barrier before deploying his parachute down to Earth. Even if it seemed a crazy, impractical and very dangerous idea, what is remarkable is that it was important to him to perform this jump and he didn’t stop until achieving his task, after preparing for five years. With this jump he became the first human being to break the speed of sound in a free fall and from such a height.

A step for Cuba

For the first time after half a century, the Cuban government announced that, starting in mid-January, the required procedure of soliciting a permit to exit in order to travel will be eliminated.  The only requirement will be a current passport and a visa of the destination country if required. This is one less obstacle for Cubans to be able to travel, as getting a permit was very difficult and expensive. Even though there’s still a lot to overcome, as they will have to apply to get a passport and a visa, it could be a good first step.

Day of the Girl

On October 11, 2012 the first International Day of the Girl Child took place, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly. Its members, as well as international organizations and society in general, were invited to create awareness about the vulnerable situation that girls face around the world. The purpose is to promote their rights in education, sexual and reproductive health, integrity and equality. This celebration highlights the empowerment of girls and the protection of their human rights.

Nos trasladamos a la isla de Sicilia, en Italia, en donde transcurre la historia de Mario, el cartero de la película “Il Postino”. Llevando el correo, Mario entabla una amistad con el exiliado poeta Pablo Neruda, descubriendo a través de los versos del poeta la poesía en su propia vida. La banda sonora, creada por el compositor argentino Luis Bacalov, ganó el Oscar  en 1995.

La canción “In Bicicletta” imagina al cartero pedaleando a través de hermosos caminos, al borde del mar.

We move to the island of Sicily, in Italy, where the story of Mario, the mailman from the film “Il Postino”, takes place. As he delivers the mail, he starts a friendship with the exiled poet Pablo Neruda, discovering trough the poet’s verses the poetry in his own life. The soundtrack, created by Argentinian composer Luis Bacalov, won the Oscar in 1995 for best original score.

The song “In Bicicletta” imagines the postman pedaling through beautiful roads, by the seaside.

Aportes de los premiados con el Nobel

Esta semana se anunció a los premiados con el Premio Nobel de Medicina,  Física, Química, Literatura y Paz correspondientes al año 2012.

El premio de medicina se concedió al británico Sir John Gurdon y al japonés Shinya Yamanaka por sus investigaciones en células adultas, que demuestran que las células maduras especializadas se podrían reprogramar para ser capaces de convertirse en cualquier tipo de tejido. Con ello se podrán tener nuevas oportunidades para estudiar enfermedades y desarrollar métodos de diagnóstico y tratamiento.  

El Nobel de Física corresponde a Serge Haroche, de Francia y David Wineland, de Estados Unidos, por haber demostrado la observación directa de sistemas cuánticos individuales sin destruirlos, tomando los primeros pasos para construir un nuevo tipo de computadora super rápida, basada en física cuántica, y relojes extremadamente precisos que podrían ser la base futura para un nuevo estándar de tiempo.

Los estadounidenses Robert Lefkowitz y Brian Kobilka ganaron el Nobel de Química por descubrimientos que revelan el funcionamiento de los receptores acoplados a proteínas G, importante familia de receptores que permiten a las células de nuestro cuerpo percibir su entorno y adaptarse a nuevas situaciones. Estos receptores, que están en la membrana exterior de las células, son los que permiten que medicamentos como los que se utilizan para tratar la presión alta, el mal de Parkinson o la migraña, entre otros, tengan mejor efecto.

El Nobel de Literatura fue para Mo Yan, de China, quien  “con un realismo alucinatorio fusiona los relatos tradicionales, la historia y lo contemporáneo”. Mo Yan significa “no hables” en mandarín y es el seudónimo que usa el autor, cuyo verdadero nombre es Guan Moye. Mo Yan es la primera persona viviendo en China que gana el Nobel de Literatura.

Por último, no por ello menos importante, el premio Nobel de la Paz se entregó no a una persona sino a la Unión Europea (UE) en conjunto, que  recibe este premio en medio de la crisis financiera que atraviesa. Frente a la controversia, el  Comité Nobel Noruego que se encargó de designar al ganador del premio de la paz, justificó su elección enfocándose en lo que considera el aporte más positivo de la UE: "por seis décadas ha contribuido al avance de la paz  y la reconciliación, la democracia y los derechos humanos en Europa". La función de la UE ha ayudado a transformar a Europa "de un continente de guerra a otro de paz".  

Contributions from the Nobel Prize recipients

This week the winners of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace, were announced. 

The prize in Medicine was awarded to British Sir John Gurdon and Japanese Shinya Yamanaka for their investigations in mature cells, demonstrating that mature cells can be reprogrammed to be capable of becoming any tissue of the body.  With this, there will be new opportunities to study diseases and develop methods for diagnosis and therapy.

The Nobel Prize in Physics belongs to Serge Haroche, from France and David Wineland, from the United States, for demonstrating the direct observation of individual quantum systems without destroying them, taking the first steps towards building a new type of super fast computer based on quantum physics, as well as the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time.  

The North Americans Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka were awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discoveries that reveal the inner workings of G-protein-coupled receptors, an important family of receptors that enable the cells of the body to sense their environment, so it can adapt to new situations. These receptors, located in the cell wall, make possible that medicines like the ones used to treat high blood pressure, Parkinson or headaches, have better effectiveness.  

The Nobel in Literature went to Mo Yan, from China, “who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary”. Mo Yan means “do not speak” in mandarin and is the pen name adopted by the author, whose real name is Guan Moye. Mo Yan is the first person living in China awarded with the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Last, but not least, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded not to a single person but to the European Union (EU) as a whole, which receives this prize in the middle of a financial crisis. To face the controversy, the Norwegian Nobel Committee, responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Price Laureates, justified its decision highligting what they consider the most positive contribution of the EU: "for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe". Its function has helped to transform Europe "from a continent of war to a continent of peace".

This picture is of the city of Stockholm, the largest city of Sweden and its capital, place of the Nobel Prize. Well known for its beautiful buildings, architecture, parks, museums, gardens and channels, Stockholm is distributed along 14 islands in lake Mälaren and extends towards the Baltic sea on its oriental edge. The view of the city in the picture is from Skansen, park and open air museum that reproduces the way of life in past centuries in Sweden, with buildings from 1680 and people wearing the costumes and performing activities of the time.

INSPIRING MUSIC

La música que nos inspira esta semana es “Música nocturna de las calles de Madrid”, del cellista y compositor italiano Luigi Boccherini  (Lucca 1743-Madrid 1805), usada en diferentes películas y también en la ceremonia inaugural de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 1992.

La versión que comentamos es del movimiento Passa Calle, que se incluye al final de la película Master and Commander: Al otro lado del mundo. En ella el capitán, interpretado por Russell Crowe,  al enterarse que el barco que capturó y que había enviado a Valparaíso estaba en riesgo de ser recuperado por el enemigo, da la orden de cambiar de curso y perseguirlo, postergando la intención del doctor de explorar las islas Galápagos. El capitán le hace notar que el ave que quiere estudiar no irá a ningún lado porque no puede volar y los dos empiezan a tocar juntos la música de Boccherini, disfrutando del momento. El mensaje aquí podría ser que algunas veces es necesario saber cambiar de curso ante lo inesperado,  y no perder así las nuevas oportunidades que se puedan presentar.

Pasemos a escuchar esta hermosa y alegre música, compuesta por Boccherini inspirado en escenas nocturnas de las bulliciosas calles de Madrid. 

The music that inspires us this week is “Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid”, from Italian cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini (Lucca 1743-Madrid 1805), used in different movies as well as in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games of Barcelona 1992.

The version that we will comment is from the movement Passa Calle, which is included at the end of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. In this movie, when the captain, interpreted by Russell Crowe, learns that the ship that he captured and that he had sent to Valparaiso was in risk of being stolen by the enemy, orders to change course and to chase the vessel, postponing the interest of the doctor to explore the Galapagos islands. The captain notes that the bird which he seeks will not go anywhere because it is flightless and both of them start playing together Boccherini’s music, enjoying the moment. The message here could be that sometimes it is necessary to know when a change of course is needed in front of unexpected events to not loose sight of potential opportunities that could show up.

Let’s listen to this beautiful and cheerful music, composed by Boccherini as inspired in the night scenes of the busy streets of Madrid.

Un ejemplo de determinación

La semana pasada una conocida agencia de noticias informó que en una zona de conflicto ha aumentado el número de niñas asistiendo a la escuela, a diferencia de hace algunos años en que no se veía a ninguna. Estas niñas van a la escuela a pesar de estar expuestas a ataques que amenazan sus vidas.

Esta nota destaca la valentía y determinación de los niños que, a pesar de enfrentar situaciones muy difíciles, desean un mejor futuro. Es admirable también el esfuerzo de tantas personas que trabajan para que cada vez más niños en el mundo tengan educación y mejor calidad de vida.   

An example of determination

Last week a well known news agency informed that in a troubled area of the world there are more girls attending school, in contrast to none some years ago. These girls attend school despite being exposed to attacks that threaten their lives.  

This note highlights the courage and determination of the children that, despite facing very difficult situations, desire a better future. It is also admirable the effort of so many people working to make possible that more children in the world have education and better quality of life.  

INSPIRING MUSIC

Don Quijote de la Mancha, héroe de la novela de Cervantes, es un personaje conocido y querido en todo el mundo. Dentro de su aparente locura, fue quizá el más sensato, defendiendo los más desinteresados y nobles ideales.

Tal vez es cierto que el mundo necesita de más Quijotes. Esta canción del musical   “El  Hombre de la Mancha” inspirado en este personaje, expresa y alienta esta búsqueda con gran determinación.

Don Quijote de la Mancha, the hero in Cervantes’ novel, is a well known and loved character all around the world. In his apparent madness, he was perhaps the sanest, defending the most selfless and noble ideals.

Perhaps it is true that the world needs more Quijotes. This song from the musical “Man of La Mancha”, inspired in this character, expresses and encourages this search with great determination.
