Buen fin a favor del delfin

Después de cincuenta años de utilizar a delfines para localizar minas en el mar, la marina estadounidense retirará su programa de mamíferos marinos. Los delfines serán reemplazados por substitutos robóticos, permitiendo de esta manera que no se ponga en riesgo la vida de estos pacíficos y hermosos animales, que no tienen nada que ver con  lo relacionado a la  guerra o violencia.  

A good ending for dolphins

After fifty years of using dolphins to locate underwater mines the US Navy will retire its Marine Mammal Program. The dolphins will be replaced by robotic substitutes, assuring in this way not to risk the lives of these pacific and beautiful animals, which don’t belong to anything related to war or violence.

Patrimonio de Macchu Picchu de regreso a casa  

La Universidad de Yale terminó de devolver la colección de piezas arqueológicas de Macchu Picchu, que tenía en custodia, a su lugar de origen, en Cusco, Perú. Estas piezas fueron llevadas por el arqueólogo y profesor de Yale Hiram Bingham, quien redescubrió las ruinas incaicas de Macchu Picchu hace un siglo. Después de años de solicitar su devolución, las piezas  finalmente retornaron al lugar donde pertenecen.

Yale University completed the return of a collection of  archeological pieces from Macchu Picchu, which kept in custody,  to its place of origin in Cusco, Peru. These pieces were taken by the archeologist and Yale professor Hiram Bingham, who rediscovered the Inca ruins of Macchu Picchu a century ago. After years of soliciting its return, the pieces finally returned to its original site.

Zoe Everett, estudiante universitaria de 19 años, logró recaudar una gran donación para cuidar de sus hermanos. Ella de un día para otro, ante la pérdida sus padres en el reciente huracán Sandy, se vio a cargo de sus otros tres hermanos, de 11, 14 y 17 años y calculó que necesitaría al menos 5000 dólares para cuidar de ellos hasta que terminara el papeleo para acceder a los ahorros de sus padres. Zoe pidió ayuda por internet en la web “Wish upon a Hero” (Pídele a un héroe). La respuesta fue contundente, recaudando más de US$ 56,000 en un solo día, más de lo que había pedido. Aunque aún venían más donaciones, Zoe cerró su deseo para darle la oportunidad a otras personas, con un agradecimiento final: “Wish upon a Hero ha reunido fondos para mi familia más allá de lo que podríamos haber soñado. Todas nuestras necesidades están ya cubiertas. Ahora nos gustaría llamar la atención y futuras donaciones a otras personas cuyas necesidades no se han cubierto aún.”

Zoe Everett, a 19 year old college student, was able to raise a great donation to take care of her siblings. Suddenly, after loosing her parents in the recent hurricane Sandy, she had to assume the responsibility of her siblings of 11, 14 and 17 years old. She calculated she would need at least 5000 dollars to take care of them until her parents` funds became available. Zoe asked for help through the website Wish Upon a Hero. The response was overwhelming. In just one day, more than US$ 56,000 were raised, more than she asked for. Though offers from donors were still coming, Zoe closed her wish to give an opportunity to other people, with a final thank you: “Wish Upon a Hero has raised funds for my family that have exceeded our wildest dreams. At this point, my family’s needs have been met. We would like to draw attention and further donations to other individuals whose needs have not yet been met.”

A lot of couples that have realized they want to spend the rest of their lives together and want to celebrate their commitment without major complications or they wish to do it in a unique personal way, choose Las Vegas to do it. These images show the Stratosphere, hotel that has the highest tower in Las Vegas, with restaurant and attractions including the tallest ride of the world, at 329 m high, which on this occasion is also the background for a wedding.

Elvis es un ícono de Las Vegas. Aun  está presente y es recordado por los shows que ofreció en esta ciudad y por una legión de imitadores que incluso ofician bodas. Elvis Aaron Presley (1935-1977) fue uno de los más importantes cantantes y figuras del siglo veinte, incursionando con gran éxito en distintos géneros, incluyendo country, pop, baladas, góspel y blues, siendo el solista con mayores ventas en la historia de la música popular.  Esta vez nos inspira su interpretación de la canción “Always on my mind”.

INSPIRING MUSIC

Elvis is an icon of Las Vegas. He is still present and remembered because of the shows he offered in this city and because of the legion of his impersonators that even celebrate weddings. Elvis Aaron Presley (1935-1977) was one of the most important singers and figures of the twentieth century, being successful in different genres, including country, pop, ballads, gospel and blues. This time we are inspired by his interpretation of the song “Always on my mind”.
