Un buen alimento

Investigadores informaron que, ante el calentamiento global, las bananas podrían ser una fuente importante de alimento para millones de personas. Como los cultivos de maíz, arroz y trigo, así como también el cultivo de la papa podrían disminuir en algunos países en desarrollo por el aumento de la temperatura, el plátano podría ser una buena alternativa. El plátano es una de las frutas más nutritivas y ayuda a prevenir un gran número de enfermedades.

Researchers informed that due to climate change and global warming, bananas could become a critical source of food for millions of people. As the crops of maize, rice and wheat, as well as potatoes, could decrease in some developing countries due to the temperature rise, bananas could be a good alternative. Bananas are one of the most nutritious fruits and they help to prevent a great number of diseases.

Representantes de la misión de la NASA Voyager recibieron un premio Breakthrough, otorgado a proyectos que avanzan dramáticamente las disciplinas de tecnología, exploración del espacio y otros campos. Las dos naves Voyager  fueron lanzadas hace 35 años y aun continúan enviando información mientras se aproximan a cruzar el espacio interestelar.  Voyager 1, la sonda que se encuentra más lejos, está a punto de salir del sistema solar. Llegar tan lejos como nunca antes, ha sido posible gracias a que un estudiante, Michael Minovitch, resolvió en 1961 el problema de los tres cuerpos, que se refiere al sol, un planeta y un tercer cuerpo viajando a través del espacio con sus fuerzas de gravedad actuando entre ellas. Minovitch demostró que una nave puede apropiarse de parte de la velocidad de un planeta que orbita alrededor del sol y acelerar en dirección opuesta al sol sin usar el combustible de propulsión de la nave.

Grandes soluciones se encuentran de la forma más inesperada. La misión oficial de los Voyager era llegar a Júpiter y Saturno, ya fue alcanzada y aun continúan avanzando. Nadie se imaginaba que llegarían tan lejos. Y seguramente continuarán maravillándonos.

Travelers

Representatives from NASA’s Voyager mission received a Breaktrhough Award, given for projects that dramatically advance the disciplines of technology, space exploration and other fields. The two Voyager spacecraft were launched 35 years ago and are still sending back data as they draw close to crossing into interstellar space. Voyager 1, the spacecraft that is farther, is about to get out of the solar system. To go so far as never before, has been possible thanks to the findings of a student in 1961, Michael Minovitch. He solved the three body problem, which refers to the sun, a planet and a third object all travelling through space with their gravities acting on each other. Minovitch demonstrated that a spacecraft can reach part of the speed of a planet orbiting around the sun and accelerate in the opposite direction of the sun without having to use its own fuel.

Great solutions are found in the most unexpected ways. The official mission of the Voyagers was to reach Jupiter and Saturn, which has already been achieved, and still going on.  No one imagined it would go so far.  And probably will continue marveling us.

The Stone

The absentminded tripped over it. The violent used it as a projectile. The entrepreneur used it to build. The tired peasant used it as a seat. It was a toy for the children. David killed Goliat and Michelangelo got from it the most beautiful sculpture. In all these cases, the difference was not in the stone, but in the person. There is not a stone in the road that you can’t use for your own development.

Estas imágenes corresponden a una ceremonia llevada a cabo hasta hoy en Maui, Hawaii, una tradición que se mantiene viva y que data desde los días del Rey Kahekili, que reinó en Maui y Oahu por 45 años a finales del 1700. En el momento de la puesta del sol, un guerrero Hawaiiano corre por la playa Ka’anapali, trepando por la Roca Negra, conocida por los Hawaiianos antiguos como Pu’u Keka’a, y enciende las antorchas que están en la cima. These images belong to a ceremony which is carried on until today in Maui, Hawaii, a tradition kept alive that dates from the days of King Kahekili, who ruled both Maui and Oahu for 45 years in the late 1700’s. At sunset, a Hawaiian warrior runs onto Ka’anapali Beach, treks up Black Rock, known by ancient Hawaiians as Pu’u Keka’a, and lights the torches on top of it. He offers lei (Hawaiian word for garland or wreath) to the heavens, addressing the ancient Hawaiian gods, and takes a leap into the ocean below. A beautiful way to show gratitude.

La canción que nos inspira esta semana es interpretada por Israel Kamakawiwo`ole (1959-1997) destacado músico hawaiano. IZ, como era conocido, fue muy querido y popular, siendo considerado una figura emblemática de la cultura musical de Hawaii.  Su versión de la canción “Somewhere over the Rainbow” incorpora de manera única el ritmo del ukelele. Esta canción fue difundida en todo el mundo y tuvo mucho éxito gracias a su gran interpretación, su suave voz y su original estilo. Nos remonta a ese mundo más allá del arcoíris, a ese paraíso que es Hawaii.

INSPIRING MUSIC

The inspiring song for this week is interpreted by Israel Kamakawiwo`ole (1959-1997), notable Hawaiian musician. IZ, as he was known, was beloved and popular, considered and emblematic personality of Hawaiian musical culture. His version of the song “Somewhere over the rainbow” incorporates in unique way the rhythm of the ukulele. This song was known around the world and had great success thanks to his great interpretation, his soft voice and original style. It takes us to that world beyond the rainbow, to that paradise that is Hawaii.
