El final de la pobreza en una generación
La organización internacional Save the Children publicó un reporte que presenta un nuevo sistema de desarrollo que podría acabar con la pobreza extrema en 20 años. De acuerdo a este reporte, el fin de la pobreza extrema está ahora a la vista debido al progreso en los esfuerzos por mejorar las vidas de millones, como por ejemplo la reducción de muertes de menores de cinco años y el aumento de niños inscribiéndose en la escuela primaria.
End of poverty in one generation
The international organization Save the Children published a report that outlines a new development system that could end extreme poverty in 20 years. According to this report, the end of extreme poverty is now in sight due to the progress made in improving the lives of millions, such as for example the reduction of under-five deaths and an increase in children enrollment in primary school.
Matisse recuperado
Una pintura al óleo de Matisse, “Le jardín” fue recuperada después de un largo tiempo. La pintura, valorizada en un millón de dólares, fue robada del Museo de Arte Moderno de Estocolmo 25 años atrás. Es una buena noticia que esta obra será devuelta al museo para que nuevamente el público pueda disfrutar de ella.
Recovered Matisse
A Matisse oil painting, “Le Jardin”, has been recovered after a long time missing. The painting, valued at $1 million, was stolen 25 years ago from Stockholm’s Museum of Modern Art. It is good news that this valuable work will be returned to the museum to be again available for the public to enjoy.
CES 2013
El Consumer Electronics Show 2013 en Las Vegas trajo esta semana miles de nuevos productos. Se presentaron desde sistemas de hogares interconectados que permitirán activar artefactos como el horno o la cafetera con un celular o tableta, hasta televisores con mayor definición, con pantallas curvas y activados por la voz, así como también innovadores productos para la salud. Muchos de estos productos podrían estar en nuestros hogares en el futuro.
2013 CES
The 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas brought this week thousands of new products. From interconnected homes allowing activation of devices like the oven or the coffee maker by using a phone or a tablet, to higher definition TVs with curved screens and voice controlled, as well as innovative products for health, were presented. Some of these products could be in our homes in the future.

“Estaba seguro de que me matarían. Me puse terriblemente nervioso e inquieto. Revolví mis bolsillos para ver si algún cigarrillo había escapado al registro. Encontré uno y me temblaban tanto las manos que apenas pude llevármelo a los labios. Pero no tenía fósforos, se los habían quedado. Miré a mi carcelero a través de los barrotes. No hizo contacto visual conmigo. Después de todo, nadie hace contacto visual con una cosa, con un cadáver. Le grité: “¿Tiene fuego, por favor?”. Me miró, se encogió de hombros y se acercó para encenderme el cigarrillo.
Al acercarse y encender el fósforo, sus ojos accidentalmente se cruzaron con los míos. En ese momento, sonreí. No sé porqué lo hice. Tal vez fue por nerviosismo, tal vez fue porque, cuando dos personas se acercan mucho, cuesta no sonreír. Sea como fuere, sonreí. En ese instante, fue como si una chispa hubiera saltado la brecha entre nuestros dos corazones, nuestras dos almas humanas. Sé que él no quería, pero mi sonrisa atravesó los barrotes y generó otra sonrisa en sus labios. Me encendió el cigarrillo pero se quedó cerca, mirándome directamente a los ojos y sin dejar de sonreír.
Seguí sonriéndole, consciente de él ahora como persona y no ya sólo como carcelero. Y su mirada pareció adquirir una nueva dimensión. “¿Tienes hijos?”, preguntó.
“Sí, aquí, aquí”. Saqué mi billetera y busqué tembloroso las fotos de mi familia. Él también sacó las fotos de sus niños y empezó a hablar sobre sus planes y esperanzas con respecto a ellos. Se me llenaron los ojos de lágrimas. Dije que temía no volver a ver a mi familia, no tener la oportunidad de verlos crecer. A él también se le llenaron los ojos de lágrimas.
De pronto, sin decir una palabra, abrió la celda y en silencio me llevó afuera. Salimos de la cárcel, y, despacio y por las calles laterales, salimos de la ciudad. Allí, a la orilla de la ciudad, me liberó. Y sin decir una palabra, regresó a la ciudad.
Una sonrisa me salvó la vida.”

“I was sure that I was going to be killed. I became terribly nervous and distraught. I fumbled in my pockets to see if there were any cigarettes which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches, they had taken those.
I looked through the bars at my jailer. He did not make eye contact with me. After all, one does not make eye contact with a thing, a corpse.
I called out to him ‘Have you got a light, please?’ He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette.
As he came close and lit the match, his eyes inadvertently locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don’t know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness, perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn’t want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and generated a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.
I kept smiling at him, now aware of him as a person and not just a jailer. And his looking at me seemed to have a new dimension, too. ‘Do you have kids?’ he asked.
‘Yes, here, here.’ I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his children and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes filled with tears. I said that I feared that I’d never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too.
Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the jail, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.
My life was saved by a smile.”

Una sonrisa inspira. Y sobre ella se hizo la canción “Smile”, cuya música fue compuesta por Charlie Chaplin para su película de 1936 “Tiempos Modernos”. En 1954 John Turner y Geoffrey Parsons le agregaron la letra y el título. Fue interpretada por diversos cantantes, entre ellos Nat King Cole y Michael Jackson. Qué mejor que escuchar esta canción con las imágenes de Charlie Chaplin, quien a través de su trabajo logró innumerables sonrisas.

A smile inspires. The song “Smile” was written about it. The music was composed by Charlie Chaplin for his 1936 movie “Modern Times”. In 1954 John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title. It has been interpreted by different artists, like Nat King Cole and Michael Jackson. What can be better than to listen to this song with the images of Charlie Chaplin, who through his work earned countless smiles.
